A Threat to Florida Citrus

For years a devastating citrus disease has been spreading throughout the state of Florida and as a home citrus grower you might be unknowingly spreading this disease that is known as Citrus Greening (Huanglongbing). This devastating citrus disease is spread by the asian citrus psyllid. The disease causes a change in leaf color, lopsided and sour tasting fruit, and the eventual death of the tree.

An Important alert about citrus from: Lowe’s, Walmart, and Home Depot:

Many people in FL purchase citrus from the bigbox stores above, However, citrus purchases from these stores are basically useless. At Lowes, on every tree FCT staff have inspected, we have found psyllids. Same case with many trees at Walmart and Home Depot. Many trees from these stores are heavily infected with diseases and are dying. Please, dont buy trees from these stores. FCT is currently writing letters to FDACS and the FL State Senate and House Ag committees urging them to research this farther.

What can you do?

As a home grower, these are some step you can take to protect Florida Citrus.

  1. Inspect your trees for the asian citrus psyllid and count how many you see.
  2. Place protective nets on trees
  3. Use effective pesticides such as Imidacloprid or others on the list
  4. Remove trees with Psyllid Eggs
  5. Do not home graft trees
  6. Buy only disease free trees from a nursery
